Positive posters - Change

War is over

In 1969, the United States was firmly entrenched in the very unpopular Vietnam War. Despite the public outpouring of disapproval, the US Government stuck to their guns. Literally. This had many US citizens feeling that public opinion was of little significance to their government and that their vision for a better world was a hopeless cause.

Out of the gloom, came John Lennon and Yoko Ono who embarked on a campaign for peace that gave the people a voice. Together, they rented billboards and poster space that displayed posters with the iconic message, “War is Over – if you want it.” They were displayed in 11 cities worldwide, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, Berlin, Athens, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, and London. Their intention was to get a message out to the global community; that people and co-operation can change the world to a more peaceful place.

When asked whether John believed that the posters would actually contribute to world peace he replied, “ It’s Like asking Mr. Coca-Cola, ‘do you really believe your advertisements are contributing to selling Coca-Cola?’ It certainly does contribute.”

The message was later turned into the classic Christmas protest song, “Happy Xmas – War is Over” in 1971.

Positive posters hopes that in today’s gloomy atmosphere we can bring a message of positive change through a visual image (just as these two did), that will inspire a little happiness in the quest to solve the challenges we face.

Aquí mi participación en el proyecto, gracias a mi amiga Amanda Nkeramihigo por ayudar con el texto y traducción.

CHANGE COLORS THE WORLD.
As seasons change, new colors emerge and bring the world to life. And in the same way nature does, we must allow ourselves to change. Because our life isn’t stagnant, because change is natural and because by each of us reinventing ourselves, we can transform the world we live in. What are you waiting for? Pick a shade. Shift our future.
